This time a year ago, five women who were practically strangers got together and formed Melbourne Girls Outside. We came together over a love for the outdoors, and the desire to build a community that would support and empower each other to get out and explore.
Not for one moment did Alla, Eliza, Emily, Laura and myself envision just how large we would grow, or how much we would achieve in such a short period of time.
Over the past year we have held more than 122 events, which have been lead by 35 leaders. We’ve been featured on the ABC, Concrete Playground and the Herald Sun. We’ve been a part of the formation of the Australian Women’s Adventure Alliance, made a stand against misrepresentation of women in media and been invited to speak at a number of events, including the most recent Gutsy Girls Film Festival.
Most importantly however, we have seen the Melbourne Girls Outside community grow and flourish. We’ve witnessed strangers become friends, and individuals achieve more in the outdoors than they ever dreamed that they could. We have worked to build an inclusive and empowering space where we truly believe that any person, no matter their age, background, or skill, can kill it in the outdoors.
To further build upon our MGO community, and to support and inspire those around us, we have launched the Melbourne Girls Outside blog. We hope to fill our electronic storybook with inspiration, information, opinion pieces and reviews to continue to break down those barriers that we face when it comes to the outdoors, and empowering each other to get out there and explore.
Finally, Eliza, Emily and I want to give a giant heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you. This group wouldn’t be the amazing space that it is without you, and we’re incredibly grateful to have you here.
