IF ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR LIFE, SUSTAINABILITY AND PROTECTING IT SHOULD BE EQUALLY AS IMPORTANT.
For many people, the peace of mind and meditation found on a hike cannot be replicated anywhere else. In today’s world, many products are made to be replaceable. Sustainable manufacturing is important if we hope to reduce our global footprint so that future generations are able to enjoy the outdoors.
The goal of sustainable manufacturing is to create lasting products without harmful effects to the environment. Sustainability in the outdoors can be as simple as using a reusable water bottle or packing snacks in reusable containers. When buying new gear, look for locally sourced or plastic free products. Choose products that are built to last so you can maximize your usage before needing to replace.
When out for a hike you are able to clear your mind and focus on what is around you. Getting away from the constant noise of a busy life is important for mental health. Studies have shown that getting outside and being in a green space can improve quality of life. Being outside increase your spatial awareness and allows you to notice more of your surroundings.
Hiking is a great time to quiet your mind from the stress of work and life and listen to the sounds around you. Time becomes obsolete on an adventure. Listen for bird and animal calls and see if you can find them before they notice you and flee. Playing games like stepping on only roots and rocks make you feel like a kid again and enjoy the simple pleasures of being outside. Every hike is different; even a familiar hike will feel different if you are out at a different time of the year or day.
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE, IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET OUT, ENJOY NATURE AND FUEL YOUR SENSE OF ADVENTURE. SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING IS A START TO PRESERVING THE OUTDOORS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

SOME OF THE SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS I’M LOVING:
The Frank Green smartcups and drink bottles. Don’t get me wrong. It was hands down the most expensive bottle I have ever bought in my life. But as a direct result it has been the only one I have managed to hold on to! While I personally don’t use its smart mobile app to track my water consumption, I do love how freely the pour flows and the environmental impacts from my drastic reduction of single use plastic bottles.
My Jack Wolfskin Texapore ecosphere waterproof. Not only will you never loose me in the Hawaiian jungle, but it is made with a 100% recycled membrane! This means that all three layers are 100% recycled. The majority of the jacket is made out of PET bottles, while the membrane is made from production scraps.
The Onya recycled shopping bag. As I headed into the end of the supermarket plastic bag era I had to be even more mindful about my shopping choices. Not only does this bag come with a handy carribina to clip it where you wont forget it – but the packaging that it comes in is also made from recycled products and printed in water based ink to ensure it can be either recycled OR put in the compost! Double win.
Last, but most certainly not least – the newcomer to the game Mister Timbuktu – one of our very own MGO member’s passion projects into fashionable and sustainable apparel. They design waterproof jackets, leggings and crop tops which are not only made out of old fishing nets and PET bottles in ethically sourced factories; but also ensure that quality and looks are not sacrificed on their path to a sustainable future.
These four are just the top of the iceberg in among a (hopefully) constantly growing space as we become more aware of the impacts that we are having on the health of this world. Other brands include Ever Eco stainless steel straws, ninja drink bottles and tscudo t shirts
